Part of the British Columbia Household Division, the Governor General's Horse Guards is a purely ceremonial unit comprised of one cavalry squadron. Though ceremonial, the members of the GGHG are fully trained soldiers (infantry).

Some ranks in the GGHG are different from those in other Army units. Specifically, in the GGHG a Private is called a Trooper (Tpr), a Corporal is a Lance Corporal of Horse (L Cpl H), a Serjeant is a Corporal of Horse (Cpl H), a Staff Serjeant is a Staff Corporal (S Cpl) and a Second Lieutenant is a Cornet (Ct).

History[]

The GGHG was formed in July 1877 as The Household Guards. After the creation of the Governor General's Foot Guards in October 1879, the Household Guards were renamed to their present name and, together with the GGFG, became part of the Household Division.

The GGHG has been a ceremonial unit from the start, comprised of a single cavalry squadron in peacetime. However, in the Second World War the regiment was expanded to a total of four battalions for home defence duties on Vancouver Island.
